We are marking the 25th anniversary of the gallery's close association with Anneke van Brussel with the publication of a dozen of her poems printed in facsimile on hand-made paper and presented in a splendid box.

In a manner of speaking Anneke van Brussel has written a hundred diaries, a thousand letters and a hundred thousand poems over the years, and although 12 is only a small number given the vastness of her oeuvre, what really matters is that the paper, the handwriting and the box together offer those who are really keen a glimpse of that other personality, the one that puts everything into her paintings yet rediscovers the world while writing.

The storm walks with heavy footsteps
As if there's somebody living in the upstairs flat
Whipping the roof
A silent elephant on wheels underneath
To move around
Waves are continuously rolling onto the shore
Carrying lots of bottles containing ciphered words
Such as "I am looking for you"
"I want to love you", "Cherish you"
"This body is waiting"
I was listening to the bottles with the letters
Washing ashore all night long

Anneke van Brussel (1998)
