Het klinkt poëtisch en filosofisch, maar dat zal de twee marters die knagen aan de noten in een van de schalen worst wezen. De lichte nonchalance waarmee Kwast het ongenode ingrijpen van de natuur beschrijft doet mij pardoes begrijpen hoe de honger naar kennis en kunde hem al jaren in zijn greep heeft, waardoor het onvermijdelijk was dat hij in 2021 eervol in het Rembrandtproject terecht kwam, en dat het in het jaar daarop voor zijn doen bijna gewoon was dat hij deelnam aan een tweekamp, waarbij de uitdaging bestond uit het schilderen van het verdwenen schilderij van Vermeer "Een Heer van Stand", die heer Nard won. En dat alles voor een deel in het licht van felle lampen, met een onverbiddelijk registrerende televisiecamera over zijn schouder gericht op doek en penseel. De lichtvoetige manier waarop ik dit beschrijf doet geen recht aan de geweldige inspanningen die Kwast zich moest getroosten, maar dat krijg je als het leerproces en de hoofdprijs samenvallen.

Somewhere I read a confession by Nard Kwast, in which he speaks of the ravages of time, gnawing at everything, even the arrangement of the still life he is still painting. It sounds poetic and philosophical, but that will be of no concern to the two martens gnawing at the nuts in one of the bowls. The slight nonchalance with which Kwast describes the uninvited intervention of nature makes me suddenly understand how the hunger for knowledge and skill has held him in its grip for years, making it inevitable that he was honorably included in the Rembrandt Project in 2021, and that the following year it was almost commonplace for him to participate in a duel, the challenge of which consisted of painting the lost Vermeer painting "A Gentleman of Standing," which Mr. Nard won. And all this partly in the light of bright lamps, with an unforgivingly recording television camera pointed over his shoulder at canvas and brush. The lighthearted way in which I describe this does not do justice to the tremendous efforts Kwast had to make, but that is what happens when the learning process and the grand prize coincide.
