  Open Day at Spiegelkwartier

The temperature might indicate otherwise, but fortunately the Christmas lights have been switched on as convincing proof that the month of December has once more come around. The Spiegelkwartier too has been decked out in festive lighting, even considerably more so than is usually the case, "Spiegelkwartier Illuminated" having been selected as the theme for the Open Days to be held on 16 and 17 December. Just under a hundred antiquarians, art traders and gallery holders will be adding to their already special ambience, and if all of this is not enough, it has unanimously been decided to stay open until 10 p.m. on Friday, the 15th of December as well.

The "Spiegelkwartier Illuminated" event is scheduled to be launched on Friday, 15 December at 5.00 p.m. at the Hans Brinker Hotel on Kerkstraat 136. Admission by invitation only. Tickets are available in limited numbers from Spiegelkwartier members. These are listed in a handy brochure a copy of which they will be happy to provide you with. There are two tell-tale signs of Spiegelkwartier membership. One is that members have one or two spherical topiary boxes sitting outside their establishment. The other is that in the event that the plants are still inside, you can pinpoint the members by the scent of the evergreen box plant, which pongs of cat pee when kept indoors.

The admission ticket also qualifies the holder to attend the traditional Open Day lecture, which this year will be given by Klaas Martijn Akkerman on the theme of "Jewellery from 1850 to 1950". Venue: the Rijksmuseum's auditorium, western entrance; date and time: Saturday, 16 December, 11.00 am.
