Some remarks about the Collection in Present and Past

The Dutch artists making up our gallery's "stable" are in the premier league of contemporary realism as a genre. Against the background of this small country's rich heritage when it comes to painting, it is odd that the question as to whether the artists we represent are characteristically Dutch (with the exception of Goudji, of course) is usually answered by foreigners, usually with a heartfelt "yes". Looking beyond the national borders, I myself can see differences which with a bit of poetic licence could be qualified as being particular to a specific country: the heart-rending themes of the Germans or the darker tones used in the Mediterranean countries, to name but two examples. At the same time it is my distinct impression that these differences are slowly but surely levelling out. I remember vividly the striking similarity between the work of a Japanese artist and that of a Flemish still-life painter whose work we know well. Styles are as transient as fabrics...

Contemporary Silver

The sculptural aspect can be classified into several episodes. During the 1970s en 1980s a series of annual exhibitions entitled "Earthen Realities" promoted predominantly figurative ceramics. Around 1990 the focus shifted for several years to bronzes, involuntarily heralding the revival of contemporary bronze sculpture in the Netherlands which has held fast to date.

1996 was the year in which contemporary silver, as a relatively new and still "modest" movement in which exceptional design transforms into extraordinary silver sculptures, was highlighted as part of the collection.
