Italië: Wolfango, Gianfranco Ferroni, Giorgio Scalco, Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni, Mario Fallani, Armodio, Luciano Ventrone, Mario Madiai, Roberto Rampinelli, Maurizio Bottoni, Claudio Cargiolli, Claudio Sacchi
Spanje: Xavier Valls, Angel Badia Camps, Louis Marsans, Francisco Lopez, María Moreno, Isabell Quintanilla, Pedro Moreno Meyerhoff, Raimon Sunyer, Julio Vaquero, Miguel Macaya
Frankrijk: Tibor Csernus (geboren in Ungarn), Pierre Skira, Michel Henricot, Jean-Pierre Le Bozec, Ivan Theimer (geboren in der Tschechien), Pierre Carron, Jean-Baptiste Sécheret, Philippe Garel

Initiation: The idea came to museum director Gerd Lindner five years ago on seeing the work of Henk Helmantel, and that of many others since.

Theme: Overview of contemporary still lifes in countries where this genre has been flourishing since the 17th and 18th centuries.

Scope: 150 paintings by living painters borrowed from predominantly private collections, assistance having been sought in compiling the works from reputable galleries such as Forni in Bologna and Claude Bernard in Paris.

The Dutch contribution was achieved with the help of Henk Helmantel, who himself made available works from his own private collection by Matthijs Röling, Rein Pol, Piet Sebens, Harry op de Laak, Jan van Tongeren and Theo Kurpershoek. Contributions by Rob Møhlmann and Berry Kuipers are also included while "Lieve Hemel" Gallery has ensured that Anneke van Brussel, Olav Cleofas van Overbeek, Ben Snijders, Theo Voorzaat and Alex de Vrede are present and accounted for.

Italy: Wolfango, Gianfranco Ferroni, Giorgio Scalco, Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni, Mario Fallani, Armodio, Luciano Ventrone, Mario Madiai, Roberto Rampinelli, Maurizio Bottoni, Claudio Cargiolli, Claudio Sacchi
Spain: Xavier Valls, Angel Badia Camps, Louis Marsans, Francisco Lopez, María Moreno, Isabell Quintanilla, Pedro Moreno Meyerhoff, Raimon Sunyer, Julio Vaquero, Miguel Macaya
France: Tibor Csernus (originally from Hungary), Pierre Skira, Michel Henricot, Jean-Pierre Le Bozec, Ivan Theimer (originally from what is now the Czech Republic), Pierre Carron, Jean-Baptiste Sécheret, Philippe Garel
Belgium: Walter Dolphyn, Willem Dolphyn, Adolf Geudens, Eric de Vree

Catalogue: The catalogue, all of which is in full colour, features all the works on show, with texts (in German only) by Claus Grimm, Diederik Kraaijpoel, Eric de Vree, Enzo Siciliano, Michael Nungesser, and Pascal Bonafoux. (Panorama Museum, Bad Frankenhausen, 2002 ISBN 3-9807182-6-3)

Verdict: A delightfully surprising exhibition featuring a wide variety of styles, although owing to museum director Gerd Lindner's personal preference a relatively strong emphasis has been placed on the traditional still life, accompanied by a delicious catalogue packed with information.

"Orbus Pictus"
Not to be outdone, Bad Frankenhausen's second-largest museum, the Kreisheimatsmuseum, has compiled a small-scale exhibition of German still lifes by well-known regional painters under the title "Orbus Pictus". Most of the works date from the period between 1945 and 1980, with additional works by several contemporary still life painters.
